A truck burst into flames on the E40 near Wetteren on Thursday morning. The driver was able to get to safety in time. The incident caused considerable traffic jams on the motorway towards Brussels.
It was around 9.15 am that the fire brigade was called to a burning truck on the motorway in the direction of Brussels. Moments before, the driver of the truck noticed the fire on the truck’s tractor and immediately moved to the emergency lane. The man was able to exit the vehicle safely and was unharmed.
A little later the fire brigade arrived on the scene and immediately started extinguishing the fire. The cargo area of the truck was filled with fertilizer, but the fire brigade eventually got the fire under control, with most of the damage being to the vehicle’s cabin.
The accident blocked two lanes. Traffic towards Brussels was diverted to one lane, causing a traffic jam from Merelbeke. “The traffic jam was about eight kilometers long, which meant waiting in line for about an hour,” says Peter Bruyninckx, spokesperson for the Flemish Traffic Center.
