Every weekday our reporter and photographer pick a random passerby from the street for a nice conversation. Because everyone has a story. And certainly in Antwerp. Today: Daniel Mévis (53).
“In daily life I am a project leader for AG Vespa, the real estate branch of the city of Antwerp. We are now working on a small renovation here in Corso – the former CC Berchem. We have a whole range of buildings in our heritage. The end users often have some wishes, which we then convert into reality. I will manage this project.”
“Two years ago I stopped working as an independent interior architect. I’ve been doing that since 1995, so a long time. The construction world, especially in a certain segment, has become very legal and requires a lot of elbow grease. That brought stress. Ultimately, this was no longer in proportion to the income. The creative aspect became so small that I stopped. At AG Vespa I can be creative again in a different way. You have to find your own way. For example, I am working on a design for the corridors in the Wezenberg swimming pool. I can say something about that. It’s different from when I had my own desk, but it’s also more pleasant, because that stress is no longer there. I often used to think: oh well, I’ll just do it differently to avoid problems or because it was legally difficult.”
“I am also currently working on a project in Ibiza. A friend of mine bought a house there and recently also the neighbor’s house. I made a design for that. So every now and then I am obliged to go back and forth to Ibiza…”
