Detectives have identified a suspect in the series of car fires in Seefhoek. The Antwerp public prosecutor’s office announced this via social media. The suspect is currently being traced. “There are elements that indicate that the suspect may have fled abroad.”

The first report of a suspicious car fire happened on the night of November 6 to 7, around 3:45 am. Close to Elisabeth pre-metro station, a fire appeared to have been ignited in one or two cars on the corner of Delinstraat and Sint-Elisabethstraat. The fire spread to several other vehicles. Ultimately, three cars burned out completely and a fourth suffered damage.

At around 6 am, car fires were also reported in Gasstraat and Korte Van Sterbeeckstraat, in the same area. One car was the target at a time.

The police started an investigation and employees of the forensic laboratory were able to confirm that it was indeed arson. The public prosecutor’s office now confirms that the police department of PZ Antwerp has been able to identify a possible suspect. “The suspect is currently being actively tracked down. There are elements that indicate that the suspect may have fled abroad,” said spokesperson Kristof Aerts. “There is no link with the drug environment.”
