Minister Ben Weyts first indicated a year and a half ago that he wanted to bring the 2027 World Cup to Flanders. The prayer has now been officialised. And a fierce competitor has now also done that.

The Red Flames are growing in popularity and motivate many young girls to start playing football. That is why Ben Weyts wants to try to bring the Women’s Football World Cup to Flanders. Belgium, together with the Netherlands and Germany, submitted a bid for the 2027 World Cup.

There are officially three competitors. Brazil, South Africa and US/Mexico are the three competitors for the Low Countries and Germany. The plan of Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany was launched a few weeks ago.

Brazil is going all out

Now the Brazilians have also officially submitted and presented their bid. They did this last weekend around the final of the Copa Libertadores. The Women’s World Cup has never taken place in South America. Will that change in 2027?

The decision will be made in the spring of 2024. The previous World Cup was organized in Australia and New Zealand, the 2026 Men’s World Cup is in the US, Canada and Mexico. Will that play a role for women? That will have to be seen.
