A car crashed into a traffic jam on the R4 near Wondelgem on Wednesday at 12.30 pm. Four people were taken to hospital with injuries. A MUG helicopter landed on the R4. The road was blocked in the direction of Evergem and Zelzate.
The accident happened around 12.30 pm on the R4, approximately at the height of the new cyclist bridge over the R4. There was a pile-up involving seven vehicles. “A car had crashed into the back of a traffic jam,” said Matto Langeraert, spokesman for the Ghent police.
The fire brigade had to rescue three people from their damaged vehicle and a MUG helicopter arrived on the scene. It landed in the middle of the R4. A fourth person was also injured. They were all taken to hospital, one of them with serious injuries. The rest escaped with minor injuries.

The R4 was closed in the direction of Evergem and Zelzate, which caused a long traffic jam. There will be disruption for hours, the Traffic Center reported around 12:50 p.m. The area can be avoided, says the Ghent police. People are calling for another route and to make way for the emergency services.
A second accident has now been reported at the Flemish Traffic Center on the other side of the R4, in the other direction from Mariakerke. The left lane is blocked and a long traffic jam has also built up in that direction.
