On November 8th Grounded premiered. For this new production, the Brussels English-language Theater House The Bridge managed to rope in Letty Thomas, known for roles in TV series. The Crown and Bridgerton. “Since Brexit, British artists have been eager to work in Europe,” says British actor Edward McMillan BRUZZ radio.
McMillan moved to Brussels in 2015. “I love Brussels, its cultural offerings and how much there is to do. But I didn’t find the theater I was looking for.”
Edward, who did not speak French or Dutch, soon encountered the language barrier when he wanted to quench his theatrical thirst. By talking about it, he discovered the same frustration in other people. But what does the saying go again? Oh yeah: be the change you want to see in the world. The Bridge has been in existence since 2021, with Edward as creative director and Éva Karamas as strategic director.
The name, The Bridge, was not chosen by chance. “We want to bring people in Brussels together with culture and with the language that is the second most spoken language in the city,” says Éva.
To be clear: The Bridge is not a hobby project for expats who want to perform in their spare time. “We attract actors and creatives from the United Kingdom, Belgium and elsewhere to set up a production. Since Brexit, many British actors are eager to come and work in Europe,” says Edward.
