The drama with little Matvii, who died last week under a fallen branch during the storm, continues to stir people. The little boy’s family is of course devastated, but the city is supporting them where possible, it appears.

The call for donations for Matvii’s funeral appears to be unnecessary. The city will bear the costs, it turned out today. “That was already decided last Friday,” says Mayor Mathias De Clercq (Open Vld). “The city pays for the funeral and all associated costs, even accommodation for the family coming over from Ukraine. The family is aware of this, the city services have informed them all. The family is also offered psychological support from the city.”

Drama

The fact that there was a call to donate money for the funeral was well-intentioned, but did not come from the family itself. The mayor will also visit the parents of the Ukrainian boy today. After all, the tragedy that struck this family is too gruesome for words: fleeing the war and then losing a child in a storm in a ‘safe’ country.

Little Matvii’s parents have stated that they would rather not have the press at little Matvii’s funeral. It will take place on Thursday, in the church in Sint-Salvatorstraat. Our editorial staff will of course respect that wish.
