Dutch people have difficulty following ‘De Verhulstjes’ due to the Antwerp accent: “Where are the subtitles?”

The popular Flemish reality soap that follows Gert Verhulst’s family is also popular with our northern neighbors. Although after the first episode, some fans showed on social media that the family’s Antwerp accent is not always intelligible. Without subtitles, the program is difficult for them to follow. “Where have the subtitles gone this season?” someone asks on X.

The new season of De Verhulstjes started last Sunday. There was a lot of excitement on social media that the family was going to appear on the TV screen again. The program is also a great success in the Netherlands. Although some northern fans expressed their dissatisfaction on X, formerly Twitter. A loyal viewer testifies about her frustrations with Videoland, the channel on which Dutch people can follow the series. She is “very nice that the Verhulstjes have been added” but notes that she is “certainly not the only one who is less able to understand our southern neighbors”. The fan wonders whether “subtitles can still be added here”.
