Lantis, the developer of the Oosterweel connection, and Uitgeverij Zwijsen, which publishes educational teaching materials, have put together a teaching package for primary education. In this way, students can become acquainted with major infrastructure works.

Since last month, 300 schools within a radius of 10 kilometers around the center of Antwerp have been receiving an educational package for students in the 5th and 6th grades. The client of the Oosterweel connection wants to help make STEM courses more attractive for future students.

STEM courses are a collective name for technological, technical, exact scientific and mathematical courses and professions. “A project like Oosterweel requires a lot of technical and technological competencies. By introducing children to STEM now, they may become convinced of the possibilities more quickly,” says Environment Director at Lantis Bart Van Camp.

We deliberately did not opt for a classic information package around Oosterweel. The idea is to show children how to apply what they learn in the real world. For example, they will be assigned to build a bridge or investigate a sound amplifier.

“The content of the educational package is in line with STEM learning objectives, which also play an important role in primary education. We help teachers make STEM concrete in the classroom, through a project that will take place near many schools in the coming years. There is enough teaching material to fill more than an entire teaching week,” says Sofie Dael. The woman is an educationalist and publisher at Uitgeverij Zwijsen.
