Mosterdmakerij De Ster from Lubbeek is in the top five nominees and has a chance to win the title ‘Product Made in Flemish Brabant’. The family business is competing for the top prize with mustard that has been in the food industry for about four generations. “We distinguish ourselves in our production by the simplicity with which we make mustard,” says Paul Eraly. What is the name of the product and what exactly is it?

“De Ster has been making real, authentic mustard for 100 years.”

Where is it produced?

“The production from seed to pot takes place in Lubbeek, about five kilometers from Leuven.”

How did you come up with the idea for this product?

“De Ster is a family business founded in 1924, where mustard has been made for four generations.”

Why are you so proud of this product specifically?

“At De Ster, we have remained true to our tradition for 100 years: offering a simple, honest product with 4 ingredients that does not compromise on taste and quality. Our mustard is a pure product with seeds from our own cultivation close to the mustard factory that we process authentically and slowly into mustard.”

Who are the main buyers of your product?

“Our buyers are located throughout Flanders, but our home base is in and around Brabant. Our jars can be found at butchers, bakers, grocers and various supermarkets, but many restaurants also like to use our mustard in their recipes.”

What kind of company are you exactly?

“We are a family business, where production from seed to jar is done as much as possible in our mustard factory. About 5 people work there.
In the past, Brussels cheese, pickles and pickled vegetables were also processed. But these recipes will not be expanded further for the time being. The focus is on making the mustard. In addition to the mustard, we develop various ideas for modern applications such as mustard biscuits, mustard caviar, mustard pralines, etc..”
