The Flemish Traffic Center expects a difficult morning rush hour on the E314 from Lummen to Leuven on Monday morning due to an overturned truck near the Gasthuisberg complex. There has been a traffic jam from Aarschot for an hour and the disruption will probably last for a long time.

Just before 4:30 am, a truck driver lost control near Gasthuisberg, causing his truck to overturn and catch fire. The truck ended up under a bridge over the E314, which made the towing work more difficult. The truck completely burned out. It is not yet clear what cargo he was transporting. The driver was able to get himself to safety in time and was slightly injured, but did not have to go to hospital.

“It promises to be a difficult morning rush hour, and probably also a difficult morning,” says Bruyninckx, spokesperson for the Flemish Traffic Center. For the time being, traffic can still flow in one lane, but during the morning the emergency services will have to completely close the highway for a while for the towing works. “Fortunately, the truck is between the exit and the entrance to the motorway. If the highway is closed, drivers can use the exit and entrance ramp.”

The Traffic Center and the emergency services ask to avoid the zone for the time being, Bruyninckx said. “We already saw a traffic jam of 3 kilometers before 6 a.m. and we expect the traffic jam to increase further during the morning rush hour.” Long-distance traffic, for example from Hasselt to Ghent, can travel via Antwerp.
