she sang J’ai Deux Amours, but she had many more loves in her life. If you spontaneously think of erotic dances when you hear the name Josephine Baker, you are actually grossly short of her. Not only was she a gifted artist, but she was part of the resistance during the Second World War. She fought against discrimination and stood with Martin Luther King. And turned out to be a caring mother to a large group of children. For that reason, last year, under the impulse of French President Macron, she was interred in the Pantheon. And, ten years after the first premiere, she gets a new Flemish musical version of Josephine B.

The title role is right up the alley of Sandrine, who also opted for a very broad career. “I like people who are different,” Sandrine explains her fascination with the memorable woman. “Not normal anyway, what she accomplished. She joined the resistance. Fought for the freedom of the people. She thought it was very important to be who you are,” says the singer. “I was brought up with the mentality of my mother who said ‘There is enough for everyone’. I really like that and Josephine Baker also had that attitude. She grew up in poverty and when she got fame she shared with everyone. That is also the reason why she was even declared bankrupt at one point.”

Iconic skirt

“She didn’t have any diva tricks in the negative sense of the word,” says Sandrine. “She knew what she was doing and why. I myself try to be as diverse as possible and that is why I enjoy everything I do so much”, Sandrine admires the life of Josephine Baker.

All those aspects are discussed in the musical, but of course her career plays an important role. And that includes the inevitable banana skirt that everyone associates with her. “It has to, absolutely, it’s part of it. If you want to tell her life, that is an important part”, realizes Sandrine, who has already tried on the banana skirt. The public has to wait until October 1 to see how Sandrine develops into a diva in the Fakkeltheater. Josephine B.surrounded by eight actors who play the most important men in her life.
