The Athens of the fifth century BC is located between the Leie and Scheldt until the end of June. The colorful ‘parade of fire and abundance’ that kicked off the All Greek Festival of NTGent departed from the Krook on Wednesday morning.

About 450 people gathered at 9 am on the Nelson Mandela promenade on the Krook. There the fire that Prometheus stole from the gods to give to the people was kindled. The parade stopped at the bridge in Lammerstraat for a concert by the children of ‘Mais quelle chanson’. Under the direction of Kapinga Gysel they sang ‘Loving me’ by Froukje. From there the parade went to the Oranjeberg. On the square, Brussels Creahm, an organization that works with people with mental disabilities, gave a moving improvised performance. It was based on the tragedy of Prometheus and a kind of Procession of Echternach: one step forward and two steps back. (read more below photo)

The parade ended with chants on Sint-Baafsplein, where a large circle was made around the fire. Matthias Velle, curator of All Greek Festival, addressed the crowd on the steps of the NTGent. He made it clear that in the coming weeks the festival will travel to all neighborhoods with the 32 remaining Greek tragedies and that the fire will always travel with it. The festival ends on June 22 with a large closing party in the Blaarmeersen.

Practical information and the full program of All Greeks Festival can be found at www.ntgent.be. All events are open and free, registration is not required.
