Noodle restaurant Zuru Zuru celebrates its fifth anniversary this month, but only a few customers have managed to complete the ‘spicy ramen challenge’ so far. “He’s quite extreme,” he says. “One of the ingredients scores 1.6 million on the Scoville scale.”
How spicy do the customers of Zuru Zuru on Kortrijksesteenweg want their windows? They decide that completely themselves. Is it your first time? Then the team recommends not going higher than level 2. The diehards can take on the ‘spicy ramen challenge’ and try a level 5.
“What exactly is in there is a secret,” says chef Nick Hofman, who was trained by grandmasters in Japan. “I can only tell you that it is a mix of different spicy peppers, spicy herbs, spicy oil and extracts. One of the ingredients scores 1.6 million on the Scoville scale.”
Delicate souls should not start it themselves. “It’s quite extreme,” says manager Matthi Peeters. “Only a dozen people order a level 5 every year and only 1 in 2 makes it. We do not offer a reward, but eternal fame, which they will certainly receive when their bowl is completely empty.”
