Jean-Claude van Damme doesn’t care about Arnold Schwarzenegger. In fact, when Arnold was battling Sylvester Stallone for the top spot in the action genre, Jean-Claude created his own niche.
The 63-year-old martial arts specialist from Belgium made film classics such as Bloodsport, Lionheart and Kickboxer. Jean-Claude is concerned with the story, not with the amount of explosions, the weapons and the many deaths. It is striking what he once said about himself.
No compliment to Arnold
In his personal piece here at IMDB, he even compliments everyone except Arnold. He says: “I love Christopher Walken, Steve McQueen and Paul Newman. Rocky and Rambo have drama and passion.”
Jean-Claude considers himself ‘the Fred Astaire of karate’ and says: “Arnold doesn’t do anything for me. I like films like The Godfather and Deer Hunter. These are films with real acting and talent.”
Those muscles from Brussels
In addition, he is happy with his nickname “The Muscles of Brussels”, because it is better than “The Idiot of Brussels”. The MGM YouTube video below features several of Jean-Claude’s action scenes.
