On January 25, the Vooruit will briefly transform into a ‘Temple of Love’. The British cult band The Sisters of Mercy is returning to our city, and that may bring back memories for older Ghent residents.
The fact that The Sisters of Mercy still has many fans after more than 40 years is proven by the two sold-out concerts that the British gave in the Brussels AB last year. They come to Ghent in January, with a series of classics such as Temple of love, Body and soul and Alice under the arm.
It is not the first time that The Sisters of Mercy have performed in the Vooruit. In 1985, at the height of their fame, Andrew Eldritch and co gave a concert there.
According to blogger Kinkystarcesoir, who was there at the time, the area surrounding the Vooruit was literally black with people. “The motorists were amazed at the crow’s nest hairstyles, black coats and eyeliner,” writes the music lover. A few years later, in 1991, they performed in the Kuipke.
Ticket sales start on Friday, November 3 at 10 a.m. and tickets cost 44 euros. For comparison: that is five times as much as that evening in 1985, when you could get in for 350 francs.
