An overview of the best things to eat when you have a cold:

1. Fruits and vegetables with vitamin C

Although vitamin C is not a miracle cure that will immediately get rid of your cold, it can indeed shorten the period of illness. Vitamin C is a real ‘resistance vitamin’: it stimulates the formation of white blood cells, which are an important part of your immune system (or resistance). Therefore, reach for fruit and vegetables that contain a lot of vitamin C as much as possible. For example, think of rose hips, bell pepper, chicory, kiwi and broccoli.

2. Chicken soup

A warm soup often makes you feel better right away. It soothes your throat and ‘opens’ your nose again. While chicken soup does not directly affect the virus that causes a cold, it can reduce symptoms. So be sure to treat yourself to a homemade chicken soup with lots of vegetables!

3. Herbs and Spices

It also doesn’t hurt to add some herbs and spices to your food that boost your immune system. Think, for example, of ginger, turmeric (turmeric), cinnamon and/or cloves. You can also add it to a smoothie.

4. Protein

It also doesn’t hurt to eat some extra protein. Protein is an important building block for your body. Your body needs this to be able to produce cells, including the antibodies and enzymes for the immune system. Protein can be found in fish, eggs, meat, beans and legumes.

5. Sambal (or something spicy)

Do you like spicy food? Then you can now eat a lot of this: Spanish peppers contain the substance capsaicin. Research has shown that this substance supports your immune system. So throw a lot of sambal over your food or cook with a lot of peppers.

6. Garlic

And while you’re at it, mix in some extra garlic with your meals. Garlic is a natural antibacterial agent. When you crush it, it releases a medicinal substance called allicin. This thins the mucus that is blocking your nose and soothes the inflammation of your airways.

7. Foods with Zinc

It also doesn’t hurt to make sure you get a little more zinc. Zinc is a trace element that is part of many enzymes in the body that are involved in metabolism. Zinc is necessary, among other things, for the construction of proteins, the growth and development of tissue and the proper functioning of your immune/immune system. You mainly find zinc in shellfish and crustaceans such as oysters, fish, nuts, meat and dairy products.

8. Nuts

If you feel like a snack, it is best to go for nuts, such as almonds, walnuts and Brazil nuts. These contain relatively much selenium, a mineral that strengthens your immune system. When you are deficient in selenium, viruses in your body can multiply faster. It is therefore important to get enough of this.

9. Make a smoothie with these ingredients

To ensure that you get several healthy ingredients at once, you could also make a smoothie from pineapple, ginger, honey, lemon and elderberry juice. These are all foods known as resistance boosters that are also gentle on your throat. Add some water to these ingredients in the blender and you have a delicious smoothie.

10. Anchovies

Anchovies are also highly recommended if you have a cold. The omega-3 fatty acids in anchovies are said to counteract inflammation. It gives immune cells a boost and ensures that they are preserved.

There are also plenty of things that you should not eat when you have a cold. Here’s a handy overview.
