Today is World Dementia Day. For Essen, which has been a dementia-friendly municipality since 2010, this is a good reason to introduce the new memory boxes. The two suitcases packed with information can be borrowed free of charge from the library.

“People with dementia also deserve a valuable place in our municipality. We want to include them respectfully in our society and association life for as long as possible,” says Alderman of Culture Helmut Jaspers (Vooruit). .

One in five people will develop some form of dementia. So just about every Fleming will have to deal with the disease from afar or close by during his lifetime. “To support people with dementia and their family and friends and to guide them through the problems, you can now borrow two ‘memory cases’ from the library for free”, Jaspers explains.

The suitcases contain a wide range of books, DVDs and brochures to better understand and discuss dementia. They are suitable for both children and adults. Each suitcase contains a laminated table of contents. The borrower also receives a pre-compiled cover with information on the theme ‘dementia’. As a member of the library you can borrow these suitcases for free for four weeks.

Library customers who prefer to borrow an individual copy can also find all the works separately in the library’s regular collection. In addition, the library still organizes the regional dementia café and the dementia family groups are welcome in the local service centres. Informal carers and family members exchange information and experiences and also find support from each other. (ella)
