Many people with type 2 diabetes receive medication for this, such as insulin and metformin. But this does not address the underlying cause of obesity and an unhealthy lifestyle. From 2024, lifestyle treatment in the Netherlands will be reimbursed for the first time from the basic package for everyone with type 2 diabetes. The treatment was developed by the Nutrition Leeft foundation. The foundation reports this.
The costs for the specialized combined lifestyle intervention (GLI) ‘Reverse Diabetes2 Reversal’ will soon be available to every insured person from the basic package. This is the first intervention that is included in the package on a large scale. Various health insurers already reimburse the lifestyle program, but from 2024 this will be arranged collectively.
Taper off medication
‘Reverse Diabete2 Reversal’ is an intervention recognized by the RIVM and focuses on prediabetes and diabetes patients. Because research shows that lifestyle plays an important role in the development and progression of type 2 diabetes, lifestyle adjustments can have a significant impact on this. With a healthy lifestyle, it may even be possible in the long term that someone can reduce his or her medication or stop taking it completely. The results within the program support this. Two years after the start of the program, 67 percent were able to reduce their medication and 28 were able to flush the medication down the toilet.
