The Spice Girls were a worldwide phenomenon at the end of the 20th century. This was accompanied by a lot of attention, also from the opposite sex. However, while the singers started dating, there was one who didn’t get into a relationship. And that was no coincidence.

Mel C said he was not allowed to have a boyfriend from the management of the girl group. That’s what the now 48-year-old Melanie Chrisholm, as the singer is really called, said in the Australian talk show The project. That rule didn’t apply to the other Spice Girls.

“What struck me was that it was a rule for one person, but not for the others,” she explained. According to Chrisholm, management did not think she was strong enough to enter into a relationship. “It was no problem for the others. They can have a boyfriend, they can handle that, they are strong enough, but not you. If you are already vulnerable and someone says that to you, you start to doubt yourself.”

Eventually Mel C started dating anyway. She even got into a relationship with Robbie Williams in 1997. But that didn’t turn out to be the best boyfriend, Chrisholm said. She also described this in her biography. “We’re doing a show together soon, so I’ll tell him to read that chapter,” the Spice Girl joked. “But he’s already apologized and we’ve been really good for years.”
