ShowbizDutch presenter Matthijs van Nieuwkerk responds to the report of the investigative committee, which was published on Thursday. “It is good that people have been able to tell their stories openly. I hope they felt heard and supported in this process. The most important thing is that, partly thanks to this report, we are finding our way to a better TV world.”

“I have previously expressed my regret about my part in the work culture behind the scenes of his talk show ‘The world keeps turning’. I repeat that here. I realize more than ever that as a presenter I have an important role model. I look forward to being part of programs that we enjoy working on together,” he says.

LOOK. Who is Matthijs van Nieuwkerk?

Last year, almost two hundred (former) broadcasting employees shared their personal experiences with the Research Committee on Conduct and Culture of Broadcasters. Two thousand (former) employees of the Dutch Public Broadcasting (NPO) completed a questionnaire. And their experiences don’t lie, according to the 204-page report published on Thursday.

According to the committee, more than 1,484 employees have indicated that they have experienced inappropriate behavior “as a target or witness” in the past year. This corresponds to three out of four respondents. “The committee is very shocked by the seriousness of the behavior and the number of people who came into contact with it,” it said.

“Extreme outbursts of anger from Van Nieuwkerk”

The Dutch presenter came under fire in November 2022 after an article in ‘De Volkskrant’ about the culture of fear behind the scenes of the popular talk show. The newspaper spoke to more than seventy former employees of the program. According to those involved, Van Nieuwkerk had extreme outbursts of anger, during which employees were ‘shouted at, humiliated and intimidated’ in front of others from centimeters away. It caused stress, a feeling of insecurity and even burnouts and other serious psychological complaints for dozens of people. That’s what ‘De Volkskrant’ wrote.

Van Nieuwkerk previously stated in an interview with ‘NRC’ that he was very shocked by the testimonies. “Of course I knew about those incidents. From my tantrums. But what I didn’t know: that – as it said on the front page of the newspaper – we were a burnout factory. And yes, then you are completely ashamed. I didn’t know it was that serious for some people. And I am very sorry for that,” he said earlier.
