The singer used heroin for the first time in 2002. He was 23 years old at the time. “And soon that addiction took over.” Pete reveals the moment he first became aware of his addiction. During the flight to Japan, the singer became ill and was very sweaty. “But I had smuggled heroin into Japan in my guitar.” And after landing, Pete immediately took the drugs. “Afterwards I felt on top of the world again. Everyone at that moment said, ‘Oh Pete, you look good.’”

The battle with his drug problem quickly went from bad to worse. He was arrested several times for drug violations, such as driving under the influence and (car) thefts. He was also regularly in the news with his drug problems. He was so addicted that he did not even hide it from the press, especially during the period when he was in a relationship with top model Kate Moss, who was just as addicted as he was. The photos of Kate snorting line after line with Pete Doherty went around the world. At some points in his life, drugs were so important that the singer worked as a drug dealer just to pay for his drug addiction.

But Doherty eventually turned the tide. He is now married and has a five-month-old daughter, Billie-May. The family currently resides in Normandy. Yet Pete is still fighting a battle against his drug past, he reveals in the documentary. “I’m no longer immersed in drugs at the moment, but I’m not completely out of the water yet either.” Yet the singer seems to have found his happiness again. “There is a big difference between being clean and being able to be happy and not use anything, and I try to be the latter.”
