Michel Van den Brande proposed to his girlfriend during ‘Gert’s table’. Van den Brande, known from ‘The Sky is the Limit’, was asked if there were good things in his life at the moment, after which he revealed that he had bought an engagement ring (of no less than 2.1 carats), but his girlfriend Sofie Van Remoortel has not yet proposed. “Because I first had to divorce my wife,” he explained. Michel was previously married to Marleen Blommaert. When it became clear that the divorce had already been finalized, presenter Gert Verhulst thought it was the ideal moment to ask the big question then and there.

With encouragement from the audience, the scaffold builder took his Sofie from the audience and got down on one knee. “I have knee problems,” he said. This was followed by a kiss and of course lots of applause.

The two lovers have been in an on-again, off-again relationship for eleven years, with many ups and downs. Sofie now even works in Van den Brande’s company and that has only brought them closer together as a couple. Sofie also recently said this in an interview: “I have experienced a lot with him, such as the time he disappeared from the radar for a few days. We certainly don’t have a boring relationship. (laughs) I have already packed my bags a few times, but we always come together again.” But she also said that she and Michel had no immediate plans to get married. “We’re still not married, but we don’t have to be. In the meantime, we know what we can expect from each other, without it being legally established.” So it seems to be as big a surprise for her as it is for the viewers.
