The only assets that saw more investment in 2020 was research and development (+0.4 percent). This growth can largely be explained by the pharmaceutical industry, where an increase in investment volume of 23 percent was recorded in 2020. Investments in machinery and equipment (-9 percent) and means of transport (-8.2 percent), on the other hand, fell sharply. Investments in residential buildings also fell by 6.7 percent.

When looking at the specific sectors, it appears that a decrease in investment volume was noted in all sectors, with the exception of six branches. These are the pharmaceutical industry mentioned earlier, but also the chemical industry and water distribution, waste and wastewater management and remediation. In addition, investments also increased in the scientific R&D branch, IT services and information service activities and the telecommunications sector. In other sectors, the investment volume was sharply scaled back. This included the provision of accommodation and meals, entertainment and recreation, and production and distribution of electricity, gas, steam and refrigerated air.

“The conclusion is that Covid-19 has led to a sharp decline in investment volume in 2020. The asymmetric nature of the impact of the health crisis is also confirmed in this investment data: some industries have reduced their investments more sharply, while others have increased their investments. ”, it sounds.
