Babboe is recalling 22,000 of its cargo bikes due to safety risks. This concerns a third of all cargo bikes, the Dutch company says. The first models will be collected in the Netherlands and Germany in mid-April, followed by other countries.
The bicycle manufacturer came under controversy earlier this year after several cargo bike models turned out to be unsafe. The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) is therefore already conducting a criminal investigation into Babboe. The company had recently indicated that people with a cargo bike would receive more clarity around Easter about which models the company must recall.
All owners of a Babboe cargo bike aged five years or younger that are included in the recall will be offered a new one after collecting their current cargo bike. If desired, they can choose an e-bike instead of a cargo bike. The current value is taken into account for all owners of a Babboe cargo bike that is included in the recall, but that is older than five years.
Maintenance
The majority of cargo bikes can go back on the road after maintenance, expects Babboe director Gerard Feenema. According to him, the implementation of the recall operation will take a lot of time. “We understand that this is annoying for our customers, and we have done our best to find a suitable solution and compensate them.”
In February, Babboe was ordered by the NVWA to temporarily stop selling its cargo bikes and to recall sold bicycles. After research, the regulator concluded that hundreds of frames have been broken in recent years. Babboe allegedly did not properly investigate the causes and took no measures.
