A judge in Italy has ordered the seizure of 779 million euros from rental platform Airbnb. The Italian authorities reported this on Monday.
The company is accused of failing to pay taxes on rental income between 2017 and 2021. That money must now be transferred to the Italian tax authorities, according to the court in Milan.
Under Italian law, the American platform is obliged to pay 21 percent of rental income to the Italian tax authorities.
Airbnb said in a statement that it was ‘surprised and disappointed’. “We are confident that we have acted in full compliance with the law and intend to exercise our rights in relation to this matter,” a spokesperson said.
The Italian government announced at the end of October that it wanted to combat the rental of properties for a short period and on which no taxes are paid. Rome also announced that it will increase the tax for owners who rent out more than one apartment on platforms such as Airbnb.
