Book sales in Flanders fell by almost four percent in the first seven months of this year compared to last year. This is reported by the General Publishers Group (GAU) based on data from the market research agency GfK Belgium.

From January to July, 7.359 million books were sold in Flanders through the usual sales channels, such as (online) bookstores and supermarkets. This generated a total turnover of 111.1 million euros. Compared to the first seven months of 2021, this is a decrease of 3.9 percent.

The decline is even greater in Dutch-language publications. There is a decrease of 533,000 books, or 8.1 percent. The English-language editions did remarkably well: the number of copies sold increased by more than 25 percent.

Children’s books and e-books

The comic album ‘Wake up dead’, from the series of ‘De Kiekeboes’, was sold most often during the first seven months of 2022. Lucinda Riley’s ‘The Secret Annex’ and ‘The Secrets of the Boarding School’ complete the top three.

‘I Would Love a Baby’, ‘The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse’ and ‘The Crazy 143-storey Tree House’ are the best-selling children’s books. In total, children’s books account for a turnover of about 19 percent of total book sales.

Finally, the figures show that ebooks accounted for 4.7 percent of sales and three percent of revenue during the first six months of 2022.
