According to the Flemish daily De Standaard, it concerns 50-year-old trucker Gheorghe Tibil. He was traveling with his wife Ghita on behalf of the Spanish company Castillo Trans.

The two were on their way to France when disaster struck around half past two last night. The driver didn’t stand a chance, his wife miraculously managed to bring the truck to a safe stop. The accident happened on the E42 between Namur and Liège.

“The sewer cover was thrown off the bridge and went straight through the windshield of the truck,” said a prosecutor. Such a manhole cover is extremely heavy and must in all likelihood have been lifted by several people.

The victim’s wife, who was sleeping, then woke up and pulled the handbrake of the truck and was able to put the truck on the side of the road.

Murder

So far, there is nothing to indicate that the perpetrators and victims knew each other. However, according to the Public Prosecution Service, this is indeed a deliberate action. “An investigating judge has been requested who has currently ordered a number of investigative acts. The preliminary legal classification concerns murder. Once again: according to the initial findings, this is a deliberate attack.”

There is no trace of the perpetrators. “We call on every motorist who was in the area on Friday night to report,” the Public Prosecution Service says. Although the search will not be easy: “There are no cameras in the area, it was pitch dark and no witnesses turned up.”
