Gaza demonstrators in Utrecht leave, occupation in Geneva continues
The pro-Palestinian demonstrators in Utrecht left on Thursday morning and have announced that they will return later in the day. They occupied a building of Utrecht University at Drift 25. They had received an ultimatum from the chairman of the board, Anton Pijpers. If they had not left by 00.05 on the night of Wednesday to Thursday, the police would intervene.
The demonstrators came face to face with the mobile unit on the bridge between Voorstraat and Wittevrouwenstraat and for a moment it seemed that a confrontation would occur. A group of arrested demonstrators were taken away in a bus. According to the demonstrators on the Instagram account encampment.uu, this involved more than sixty students and staff members of the university. After 2 hours most of them started to leave.
In the Swiss city of Lausanne, the nightly occupation of the Géopolis building has come to an end. The university management only wanted to negotiate if the demonstrators withdrew from the building. The students complied with that condition, but promised that they would be present again during the day.
In Geneva, a group of demonstrators has been occupying the UniMail building since Tuesday. Delegates met a delegation from the rectorate of the University of Geneva, after which the demonstrators were allowed to stay an additional night in the building.
