Two Ukrainian men were killed in a shopping center in the German town of Murnau (Bavaria) on Saturday evening. Not much later, the police arrested a 57-year-old Russian who is considered highly suspicious. The background to the murders is still completely unclear.

It is still unknown whether the trio knew each other. “We are still at the very beginning of our investigation,” said police spokesman Daniel Katz.

The facts occurred around 5:15 p.m., the spokesperson said. The perpetrator first ran away, but the police were soon able to arrest the 57-year-old suspect at his home address, not far from the crime scene.

The two victims are Ukrainians aged 23 and 36, and both lived in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district. Murnau is also part of that Landkreis. Both succumbed to stab wounds – the elder at the scene of the crime, the younger in a hospital a short time later.

The police started an investigation into a double murder. The public prosecutor’s office requests the arrest of the suspect. He must appear before an investigating judge on Sunday.
