Club icon Marco Reus (34) will say goodbye to Borussia Dortmund at the end of this season after 12 years. The midfielder and the German club have mutually decided not to renew his contract. “But first we have one big goal: winning the Champions League,” he said.

Marco Reus played in the youth academy of Borussia Dortmund from 1995 to early 2005 and returned to BVB from Mönchengladbach in the summer of 2012 as “German Footballer of the Year”. Reus was a key part of the team that stormed to the Champions League final in London in 2013 and won the DFB-Pokal twice, lifting the trophy himself as captain in 2021.

The midfielder wore the armband for the ‘Black & Yellows’ for five years, between 2018 and 2023. He will forever remain one of the club’s great figures. In his 424 appearances to date, he has scored 168 goals and assisted a further 128. In 2019 he was voted “German Footballer of the Year” for the second time.

“I am incredibly grateful and proud of this special time at my club Borussia Dortmund. I have spent more than half my life at this club and enjoyed every day, even though there have been difficult moments. I already know that I will find it difficult to say goodbye at the end of the season. Still, I am happy that there is now clarity and that we can fully focus on the very important last matches that we still have to play. We have a big goal in mind (ed. the Champions League) that we all want to achieve. To do this, we need all our incredible fans, to whom I would like to express my sincere thanks for their incredible support over the years.”
