“That actually seems inevitable to me. You will see two big things. On the one hand, even more cuts to newsrooms, which has often happened in recent years,” media researcher Jonathan Hendrickx said on Radio 1.
“But also the further price increases of the paper product, the newspaper. First of all for the paper newspaper because newspapers in Flanders are still finding it more difficult to attract more digital subscribers.”
“The paper subscription appears to be more persistent than is sometimes assumed. It seems plausible to me that we will primarily see price increases for paper newspapers.”
Luxury product
“Paper circulation is declining year after year, everyone knows that. The paper newspaper will increasingly become a kind of luxury product. A segment of the population will certainly continue to pay for it.”
“Although I don’t think it will be a daily product anymore. I personally see more of a future in newspapers that will only appear a few times, or perhaps even once a week. During the weekend, for example, we will see that the newspaper remains very strong.”
