vtwonenDid you know that we almost always use too much cleaning product? Being aware of how much product you need per job can save you money. And with the same clean result for your home or clothing. That is why vtwonen.be explains the rules.

Why should you stick to the recommended amount?

Almost every cleaning product has a recommended amount for use on the packaging. If you use more, it can even have an adverse effect in some cases. For example, if you add too much soap, the cleaned surface may not dry properly. This can cause ugly stains. Exactly what you don’t want after a cleaning. In the case of chemical cleaning products, excessive use also has a harmful effect on the environment.

Regularity is crucial: With this cleaning schedule you always know which job is planned.

Shiny dishes

Do not use too much detergent when washing dishes. You usually only need a teaspoon for one dish. Even if the soap no longer foams, the detergents in the water still work. You only need to add extra detergent if the dirt is difficult to remove from the dishes. Concentrated dishwashing liquid is better for the environment: it contains less water, which means the packaging is smaller.

Always consult the bottle for the correct dosage. When washing dishes by hand, only use concentrated detergent if you are washing the entire dishes. If you want to wash one plate or a few glasses, do this with a spray in which you have mixed concentrated dishwashing liquid with water. This way you only use what you need and prevent overdose. Check out this step-by-step plan for sparkling clean dishes.

Everything clean with one bottle

Well, the word says it all: all-purpose cleaner. It can be used for almost anything. This is useful, especially for quick cleaning, when you want to quickly wipe the countertop with a cloth, for example. But not every all-purpose cleaner is the same. In general, such a product consists of 75 percent water. However, some all-purpose cleaners are more aggressive and contain less water. In general, you can’t go wrong with a good all-purpose cleaner. One cap is often sufficient for an average cleaning.

Clean toilet

Cleaning the toilet is a job that needs to be done regularly. A toilet can quickly become dirty and unhygienic. How often you need to clean the toilet depends on the number of people in your household. In principle, once or twice a week is sufficient to make the toilet sterile again. Clean the toilet as follows:

• Spray cleaning product under the rim of the toilet bowl. It will slide down on its own and cover the rest of the inside of the pot. Swiping the bottle once along the edge is sufficient.

• Let the product work for a few minutes. Exactly how long this is depends on the product and is stated on the bottle.

• In the meantime, clean the flushing knob, the valve, the edges, the seat and the pot with a cloth and some all-purpose cleaner.

• Finally, brush the bowl clean with the toilet brush.

Just enough detergent

How much detergent you need for a wash depends on how full the machine is, how dirty the laundry is, the water hardness and the type of detergent. A 0.75 liter bottle often has a cap that fits around 40 milliliters of liquid detergent. You use this cap to dose your detergent. One full cap is enough for a half-full drum of laundry with a normal degree of soiling and medium water hardness. If you have less laundry or the drum is completely full, read the dosage advice on the back of the detergent packaging. Here you will find exactly how many milliliters you need per type of detergent and cycle.

The right amount of detergent is important: too little detergent will make the laundry gray and not clean properly, and too much detergent can eventually cause the washing machine to smell and leave stains on your clothes.

Still bothered by a smelly washing machine? This is how you deal with it.

An easy way to dose detergent is with washing machine capsules or pods. This only gives you slightly less influence on the dosage – of course you cannot only add half a pod when you run a small load of laundry. Usually one pod is sufficient, but if you will be doing a lot of washing, if the laundry is very dirty or if you live in an area with hard water, use two pods.
