Brechtsebaan will partly become a bicycle street, works will start on June 10 (Brasschaat)

The Brechtsebaan in Maria-ter-Heide will undergo a thorough renovation from June 10. The street will partly become a bicycle street and the works will last until the end of November 2025. The sewer system will be separated.

Work is being done in three major phases. The most traffic disruption is expected in the first phase. It runs from June 10 to July 12. During that period, a new sewer system, foundation, concrete edge strips and an underlay for the asphalt will be installed in the section between Bredabaan and Brechtsebaan no. 40. The renovation of the sewer system will continue there during the first phase.

In a second phase, which runs from August 5 to October-November, the work will continue from number 40 to the roundabout on Sint-Jobsesteenweg.

The first part of the Brechtsebaan will become a bicycle street at the request of residents. This means that the roadway, which currently has a width of 7 meters, will be narrowed to 5.5 meters. In the second part of the Brechtsebaan there will be two cycle paths with a width of 2 meters.

From November 2024 it will be the utility companies’ turn. They will then work until May 2025. During that period, a fiber optic connection will be provided.

From May 2025, the finishing of the street will begin with the reconstruction of the sidewalks, parking lanes, cycle paths and the like. Oaks and gleditsias were chosen. The latter species produces little fruit waste and is often used as an avenue tree. The existing trees were felled several years ago.

There is currently a mixed sewer system in the Brechtsebaan. After the works, waste and rainwater will be removed. During the works there will be a general diversion along Sint-Jobsesteenweg. The residents of the Brechtsebaan will be kept informed during the works through various channels. (janbrys)
