According to Bouchez, Energy Minister Tinne Van der Straeten (Green) manipulated the file. Grid operator Elia is also being criticized. This would have allowed itself to be used politically to needlessly postpone the extension of the lifespan of nuclear power plants.
“Some things have been said that are absolutely incorrect,” says Bouchez. “Initially it was said that we would close the nuclear power plants. High-voltage grid operator Elia wrote a report stating: ‘No problem’. Some time later, a new report was requested from Elia and then it was suddenly no longer possible to close the nuclear power stations. Then the government changed its mind: we would no longer close them all, to which Elia said: ‘Keeping two reactors open is enough, that will work.’ In the end it was a farce.”
Van der Straeten calls Bouchez’s statements “grotesque” and “a base campaign stunt – unfortunately now Mr. Bouchez’s trademark.” She also points out that the accusations have previously been “refuted piece by piece”.
Elia says it has always been transparent about energy supplies in Belgium and notes that in recent years an MR minister (Marie-Christine Marghem) was partly responsible for energy policy in our country.
