A load of frozen products was destroyed during a thorough inspection of trucks in Tongeren on Friday. The cooling of the trailer turned out to be broken. The Federal Agency for Food Safety (FAVV) came to do a check and determined after temperature measurement that the products were no longer allowed for consumption.

The traffic control took place on Friday between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. on the Maastrichtersteenweg in Tongeren. The Flemish Tax Authorities and the expertise center for car inspection GOCA also took part in the campaign.

The police issued seven citations against truck drivers for, among other things, driving with a mobile phone in hand (revocation of driver’s license), ignoring tonnage restrictions (174 euro fine) and violations of load securing (132 euro fine).

After a technical inspection by GOCA, nine trucks were found to have defects. The fine amount that had to be paid on the spot totaled 6,250 euros. A truck was in such a bad condition that it was ‘banned from traffic’. The defects represented a fine of more than 8,000 euros, but this amount exceeded the legal standard, resulting in a report being drawn up for the police court.
