The residents of a house in Veldstraat in Rekem were shocked when a fire broke out on Wednesday around 3:30 p.m. “We were sitting outside with the three children when the neighbor suddenly shouted that smoke was coming from the roof,” says the young couple. “We looked up and immediately notified the emergency services. The attic floor is nicely furnished. There is also a bathroom. All the children’s toys and other materials are stacked there.”

Short circuit

The East Limburg fire brigade responded with large equipment, including a ladder truck. “The fire was on the first floor between the plasterboard and the truss,” says Andy Knoors, officer of the East Limburg fire brigade, post Maasmechelen. “We had to pull everything apart, both inside and out, to reach the fire. For example, we had to remove several roof tiles. That is why the extinguishing work took two hours.”

“The top floor of the house suffered heavy fire damage and the roof structure was also damaged. There is water damage on the ground floor due to extinguishing the fire. The house is therefore uninhabitable. The suspected cause of the fire is a short circuit.”
