Work on the second phase of Park Brialmont is almost complete. This concerns the remaining subzones of Wolvenberg and the Brilschanspark. There are new park paths and places to stay on the water, connections for cyclists, and zones for local events.

“Park Brialmont brings together the De Villegaspark, Wolvenberg nature reserve and the Brilschanspark into the large ‘green lung’ of Berchem,” explains Alderman of Urban Development Annick De Ridder (N-VA).

Phase two of the works is now gradually coming to an end. New pools have been created in the Wolvenberg nature reserve and the existing pools have been deepened. More light is also gradually created so that the herb-rich nature has the opportunity to develop better.

The path network was partly rebuilt to prevent trespassing off the paths as much as possible. Decks have been constructed on boggy soils and along the path you will find viewpoints with benches.

In the Brilschanspark, the historic relief of the Brialmont fortress forms the basis for the park. The redoubt, the higher defensive structure that provided protection for the lower barracks, is again visible through grass slopes.

Two new places to stay were created on the water: a sunbathing lawn and a sheltered tree meadow. The existing playground was renovated and the Berchem district will install playground equipment here in June.

Opening party

For cyclists, a separate cycle path in brown-red asphalt was constructed on the outside of the park. The park paths are laid out on semi-paved surfaces. For the time being, visitors must remain on the park paths for a while to allow the newly sown grass to grow as best as possible.

“The works on Park Brialmont are almost finished. Together with the residential areas on Kanunnik Peetersstraat, this is a thorough investment in improving the quality of life and living conditions in Berchem,” said district mayor Evi Van der Planken (N-VA). “We will organize a grand opening party on June 22 to celebrate the end of the works.”

All park trails are now open. In the coming weeks, the contractor will, among other things, install the fountains and finish the new stairs on the Berchem Bridge.
