The incident happened at 1 am. “I was walking home when I suddenly saw an ambulance and a police car driving into the Meir,” says a witness. “They stopped at Kruidvat, where a boy was sitting on the bench with a number of people around him. When they asked what happened, the boy showed the stab wounds on his back. Others involved had run away into a side street. The perpetrators who fled were boys and girls. It seemed like they were having fun with it too.”

Police spokeswoman Kim Bastiaens confirms the stabbing. “A group of young people had a party on the Meir around 1 o’clock. A boy who was not wanted would also have been present. An argument broke out, resulting in a 17-year-old boy suffering several stab wounds. The victim was transferred to ZNA Cadix hospital in life-threatening condition.” His life is no longer in danger, the Antwerp police reported.

A number of people have already been interrogated, but it is not yet clear whether the perpetrators have been arrested yet.
